Keeping carbon stored in peatlands is a critical climate strategy, one at the heart of the Katingan Mentaya Project. Catalyze helped shape this pioneering initiative’s communications, from branding to website development.

Peatlands hold twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined, making them one of the planet’s most powerful natural defenses against climate change. Protecting them is essential to keep that carbon from being released into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.

KMP is the world’s largest peatland carbon initiative, showing that Borneo’s forests hold financial value when protected instead of being cleared for oil palm or timber. Covering an area twice the size of New York City, the project safeguards a living, breathing ecosystem whose protection is critical to slowing the buildup of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.

For over a decade, Catalyze has partnered with KMP’s leadership to shape its communications strategy and build tools that serve both local staff and global audiences. One challenge: how to communicate the project’s relatively unfamiliar model in a way that builds credibility and connection.

Our overall approach was to ensure that every communications effort directly supported the project’s goals, while building a broader understanding of how it works (at a secondary level).

A Communications Strategy to Anchor it all

We helped KMP shift from one-way messaging to an audience-led approach that empowered stakeholders as agents of change. Complex ideas like ecosystem restoration and carbon credits were translated into story-driven content shared through trusted community channels, especially women’s groups and youth. Building on KMP’s existing credibility, we created a communications system that boosts alignment and broadens impact.

Visual identity and Guidelines for a Consistent Brand Experience

We developed a clear visual identity and set of brand guidelines to ensure KMP’s materials present a unified, consistent face across all audiences and platforms.
