The ocean is huge, its wealth largely hidden from view, and generally abused of. And yet it delivers massive value to humanity. On this premise, Catalyze worked with WWF to design a series of visualizations to make the case for improved management of the ocean in a way that would resonate with decision makers.  

Context WWF has made ocean protection a cornerstone of its mission for people to live in harmony with nature. In 2015, the organization focused its efforts in getting governments to invest more into improved ocean management, taking into consideration the millions of people whose lives are directly tied to the sea. When it came to communicating the deep connections that run between the ocean's contribution to the economy and human wellbeing, WWF turned to Catalyze.

Having worked with WWF offices around the world for the past 10 years, we were familiar not only with the 'panda' brand but also with the priorities that WWF has identified to get the ocean higher up on the international development agenda. The challenge was in distilling the dramatic changes happening to oceans, and the intricate role of humans in driving them while suffering from their impact, without losing the audience in the complexities inherent to these ecosystems.

Approach Working from WWF's ocean economy report and a set of key messages prepared by WWF and refined with Catalyze, we came up with a set of narratives that could be told in still images. To flesh out each one, with WWF we searched for the most robust and recent data on the significance of oceans to find key figures with which to buttress the organization's call to action.

Impacts Our collection of ocean economy infographics has helped to carry WWF's policy messages globally, from international fora (World Economic Forum) to news outlets (Sci News, the Conversation), and as of 2017 were still being used for WWF's ongoing marine conservation advocacy goals -- 2 years after they were designed.
